No other religion or philosophy makes the same claim as God. God tells us He will make us a new heart and put a new Spirit in us. That new Spirit is Christ. When scripture says that God is near, it’s not saying that God is close by, next to us, in front of, or behind us. God is as close to us as can be possible because His Spirit is residing in us. Each of us, as Believers, has the Spirit of God living in our new hearts.
God’s gift to us of a new heart and a new Spirit is the essence of making us new creations. God has cast away our old hearts, and He has given us a new Spirit to replace the one that cannot live in our new hearts. Having a new heart and a new Spirit does not mean we have a new mind. God is renewing our minds daily. The process of renewal is ongoing and continual. This is what is called sanctification. However, to get to the point where our minds can be renewed, our hearts and spirits must be new.
God is in the heart of each of us who believes and opens our self to Him. Change cannot happen without the Spirit of God living in us. We can do all the things that make us look right on the outside, but it’s God who changes our hearts, our minds, and our actions. God’s new heart in each of us drives us to do God’s will and steers us away from self-will. Our hearts are now God’s dwelling places.
