Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

Genesis 32:28

The world has attempted to define us by its own standards. We have been identified as losers, manipulators, liars, addicts, alcoholics, criminals, unworthy, and damaged. While we were in the world, we were subject to the world’s standards. Most of the time, many of us seemed resolved to live with the titles the world had given us.

Recovery in Christ allows us to live by a new standard. We are no longer called by our old names. Those old names cannot define who we are in Christ. In recovery, we are not who we once were. We have struggled with God and man, thus having a new identity now.

Our struggle is not our identity. We are called by Christ to overcome this world. We break the shackles of worldly identification. Who we are now is no longer depended upon how the world sees us. Christ has given each of us who believe in Him a new identity.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, you call us by a new name. A name of hope and purpose. A name that shines your light on a broken world. You are the God of comfort and mercy. My identity is no longer tied up in what this world says I am or should be. I am Your child. A new creation. Thank you for changing me inside and out. Amen.
