A Special Worm
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4
Have you mourned your old life?
It seems odd to mourn an old way of life that for so many of us brought pain and misery. One of the most important things each of us has to do in recovery is to grieve the death of the old self. Until we grieve our old selves, we can’t fully move on to the new life in Christ. Jesus understood this perfectly.
Jesus is the great healer. He is the wise counselor. Jesus knows that we all to go through a process in order to move from one state of being to another. This is the process of mourning what we once were in order to be what He intended for us to be all along. In the beginning of our recovery we have to grieve our old self. If we don’t, we carry the old self with us and the process of transformation or sanctification can not be complete.
Here’s another way of seeing why we need to grieve our old self. This is called dichotomy. A dichotomy happens when two completely different thoughts happen at the same time. “When I came into recovery I thought I was a worm. At recovery meetings I was told that I was special. I walked away thinking I was a special worm.” Until we let go of the thinking “I am a worm”, we can not get to the side where we are wonderfully made and have a purpose.
Jesus knows this all too well. He knows the importance of mourning so that we can move into a new way of being. We all need time to grieve. It’s okay to feel sad about losing our old life. We will continue to carry our old selves into our new life unless we grief who we once were.

Father God, thank you for knowing that I need to mourn the past in order to move into the reality of the present. My past does not define me but rather gives me a reference on how to serve you and to be of comfort to others. Thank you God for comforting me as I go through the grief process and move fully into this new and exciting life you have given me. Amen.
