Acceptance seems to be one of the more challenging aspects of recovery. Most of our recovery groups pray the Serenity Prayer at each meeting. A part of the Serenity Prayer asks God for wisdom to accept the things we cannot change. Acceptance is a huge part of recovery because with acceptance comes wisdom. We pray for acceptance, and we also receive wisdom.
There are people, places, and things that are going to require us to have acceptance. Transformation begins when we realize we don’t have the power to change ourselves. If we did, we wouldn’t need God. The character defects that caused us to self-destruct would not have existed if we were able to get rid of them by ourselves.
Acceptance is the beginning of wisdom. In recovery, we stop trying to change things we have no power over. Acceptance helps us to look at others with Christ-colored glasses. We no longer live in the fantasy world of what-ifs. Acceptance keeps us grounded in reality, but it does not bind us by the chains of fatalism. We pray for acceptance, and Christ gives us serenity.
