We might be the only example of Jesus Christ some people have ever seen. There are so many people who have never seen love, grace, mercy, purpose, and generosity demonstrated to them. These are people who we come into contact with each day. People at our jobs and schools, as well as our neighbors. We are all born into sin. None of us were taught how to hate, be selfish, or be jealous of others. Sin comes naturally to us. We, as Believers, have to demonstrate the love of Christ and be the example of what it means to be a Believer in recovery.
We do the same things in our recovery groups. Newcomers walk into our groups each week and are desperate to see Christ at work. There are many times when this is the first time they have witnessed the love and mercy of Christ. When a person sees Christ in us, it can be a little unsettling for some folks. They have lived their lives with a set of beliefs that run counter to that of Jesus. We just demonstrate love, that we care for them, and let them know we understand they are struggling.
Being an example of a Believer in recovery is a huge responsibility. To be an example means that we need to not just talk the talk, we also need to walk the walk. We need to also demonstrate taking care of ourselves and participating in our own recoveries. We need to set that same example for ourselves. As we model change and growth in ourselves, those who are new to recovery will see us working our own programs. Ultimately, new people to recovery will see the example of Christ in each of us.
