Recovery is all about being different. We are not the same as we used to be. We don’t adhere to the world’s standards or views. Most of the time we stand out because we are different from those who are not walking with Christ. It’s not about our outward appearance; we still wear most of the common clothes of our culture, when it’s appropriate. Our thinking is different and how we treat others is different. We stand out because we do not follow the norms of our society.
Believers in Christ-centered recovery take the idea of not being normal to a whole new level. We understand that the norms of this world do not include grace, love, and understanding. And each day that goes by, we are more and more separated from this world’s standards. We are foreigners in this world, and our ways are not the ways of the society around us.
We embrace being different. We don’t call ourselves different and yet go along with what the world says we must do to fit in. We are the ones who love others no matter how different they are from us. Just because someone does not agree with us, we do not cast them aside. We forgive quickly and often, refusing to carry grudges. Ours is a language of love and peacemaking. The world persecutes us because we are different. In recovery, we learn that the stronger our persecution, the more our blessings will be, here on Earth and in Heaven.
