Breath
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. Psalm 40:3
Recovery calls for us to take some time and breathe in God’s Word. Reading God’s Word will give us new breath and, at times, take our breath away. His Word fills us with wonder and hope. Recovery is full of those breathtaking moments. We witness new life pour into someone who, just days, weeks, or months before, was a walking corpse. We see God breathe and transformation occurs. God awakens us from the dead and dying. We rise and know that we are now spiritually breathing each breath we take.

God’s Word is our spiritual breath. We spend time each day breathing in what God is speaking into our lives. This air is pure and life-affirming. We learn in recovery that to live without God’s Word is to live without spiritual breath. To live without spiritual breath is to suffocate on the noxious fumes of this world.

Recovery is about learning how to breathe spiritually. Our bodies are able to breathe in the physical world, and now we learn how to breathe with the Spirit. Our souls are no longer on life support. We are now living with the Spirit and breathing life into our souls.

Father God, You are the give of breath to all living things. You breathe into us and we come to life. Reading Your Word is spiritual breathing. I want to breathe in all Your Word and fill my lungs with Your love and grace.  You are the air I breathe. Amen.
