First Light

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. Mark 7:36

Step 12: HAVING HAD A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE AS THE RESULT OF THESE STEPS, WE TRY TO CARRY THIS MESSAGE TO OTHERS AND PRACTICE THESE PRINCIPLES IN ALL OUR AFFAIRS.

In Christ-centered recovery, there are two things that are suggested for us to do in order to keep our recoveries on track. We are to carry the message of healing that comes from Christ, and we are to practice the principles of Christian recovery in our daily lives. Carrying the message to others and practicing the principles of recovery are not mutually exclusive. We cannot do one without doing the other.

After having had a spiritual experience, carrying the message and practicing the principles of recovery are something that we do to glorify Christ. Our hearts have been changed, and the way we see everything is completely different from the way we used to. At one time, we would have carried the message to others out of our own selfish needs to not go back to our old addictions and habits. Having had a spiritual awakening stops us from reaching out to others purely for self-interest, but instead causing us to do it out of love for Christ and others.

Having a spiritual experience with Christ changes the motives we have for everything we do in life. We practice the principles of recovery in every relationship and every situation. Honesty, faith, love, grace, mercy, and hope are not just words. Now they are principles that are incorporated into everything we do and every aspect of our lives. We carry the message of Christ, and we practice being the example of the hope of Christ. We are the example of what Christ does for those who desire freedom and a life filled with purpose.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, may we always carry the message of hope and love that comes from Your Son, Jesus. May we do it out of love and not an obligation. Help us to practice the principles we learned in recovery in all our affairs. Amen.
