Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.

Ephesians 4:22

Change happens because we decide to change. There’s nothing more we can do other than deciding that something in our lives needs to change, or maybe our entire lives. God does the work of changing what needs to be changed. However, God is a gentleman. He’s not going to come into our lives to make changes unless we invite Him to make these changes. Our responsibilities are to recognize change is necessary, have the willingness for that change to take place, and ask God to make the change in us.

Change happens because we are intentional in our desire to be different. We must ask ourselves if we are going to be the same a year from now, or are we going to be better. Then we need to ask ourselves, what changes have taken place over the past year. Are we moving towards being healthier, happier, more mature, or closer to Christ? These are not things that are going to magically happen. We commit to change, ask God to change us, and then step out of the way so He can do His work within us.

Change means letting go of what is comfortable. Change means that we let go of the old so that we can grab hold of something new. We make the decision to let go. Fear of losing what is comfortable is what holds us back from reaching out for something new. Letting go becomes a spiritual exercise rather than a mechanical one. We must spiritually let go of our fear in order to make room for Christ. We let go of whatever has been holding us back, grabing onto Christ so He can give us something new.

Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, You love us just the way we are right now. But you also love us enough to change us into something new and wonderful. You gave us the power fo choice and each day we choose to be more like Jesus or to stay where we are. Either way, You love us and want the best for us. Help us to change from what is comfortable into what we are not familiar with. Amen.
