Chosen

Take a good look, friends, at who you were when you got called into this life. I don’t see many of “the brightest and the best” among you, not many influential, not many from high-society families. Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these “nobodies” to expose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”? That makes it quite clear that none of you can get by with blowing your own horn before God. Everything that we have—right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start—comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That’s why we have the saying, “If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God.”

1 Corinthians 1:27-31 The Message (MSG)

Christ is choosing us to come on an amazing adventure with Him. We aren’t chosen because we have great wealth, because of our standing in society, or because of our great intellect. God is choosing many of us to come with Him on this great recovery adventure because we are not those things. We are often disregarded and overlooked. We’re the exact type of people Christ wants to be with.

Christ is giving us a new life filled with adventure and purpose. We are a people who have lived a past filled with loss and despair. Each day of our lives was simply a means to get to the next day. Christ chooses us over the elite and self-absorbed. The only thing outstanding about us is that our lives were magnificently messed up.

We are the chosen of Christ. Chosen because we could not live our lives in a meaningful way without Him. Christ found us living in the shadows of this world and places us in His bright Light. The life we have now is chosen for us, and we are selected for Him. Christ looks at us and declares us to be His. Like the 12 disciples, Christ asks us to follow Him into a new life of purpose and adventure.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, thank You for forgiving us and setting us free from the bondage of having to work for forgiveness. There’s no amount of striving for atonement that will set us free from our past sins. You have forgiven them and now we are free to serve in love and joy. Amen.
