To see with clear eyes, we must first have a pure heart. Wisdom and discernment come from extracting everything in our hearts that hinders our ability to view the world in a realistic manner. When we have hearts filled with pride, we tend to see the world with a viewpoint of arrogance and selfishness. When our hearts are filled with envy, all we see is scarcity and ungratefulness. Our hearts and eyes are connected. Whatever resides in our hearts is how we see people and situations going on around us.
In recovery, it’s Christ who helps to create a pure heart in us. Our hearts need to be pure so that our site is clear. Without a pure heart, we cannot see what God is calling us to do. Christ wants to change us from the inside out. We can’t act our way into having a pure heart. When our hearts are changed, our behavior and attitudes reflect that change.
Christ is giving us an extravagant purpose to fulfill His will. We must be able to clearly see what He is giving us in order to grasp the enormity of His plan for us. When our hearts are pure, we see with clear eyes the love, grace, and mercy Jesus gives to all of us. Recovery provides a way for us to receive a pure heart and clear eyes. Our hearts are becoming pure and we are no longer blinded by the darkness of our old hearts.
