And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.

Hebrews 10:24

Each of us was created with a need to have a connection with one another and with God. Our physical and mental health is seriously affected when we don’t experience a connection to others and God. God has placed in each of us a need to belong and to be a part of something greater than ourselves. It’s the lack of connection from God and others that causes us to have problems with stress and anxiety.

None of us can be an island unto ourselves. There is no way possible to get all our needs met without the help of other people in our lives. The enemy tries to separate us from everyone else in very subtle, yet drastic ways. We believe the lie he tells us that we can never rely on anyone else to help us get our needs met. We then begin to think that things, instead of God and people, are our most important needs. We look for comfort and security in things that cause addiction and dysfunction.

Making a change away from isolation and lack of connection to people requires time and commitment. Many of us have lived separated from others for a very long time. Coming into recovery is like taking an animal that’s been in the wild its entire life and attempting to tame it. We are never going to be completely tame, but we can become more and more comfortable with having a real, open, and growing tie to others. God is calling us to Him in order to experience a personal relationship. It’s in our connection to God and others that we find the purpose God has for our lives.
