Count It All As Loss

The very credentials these people are waving around as something special, I’m tearing up and throwing out with the trash—along with everything else I used to take credit for. And why? Because of Christ. Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung. I’ve dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ—God’s righteousness. Philippians 3:7-9 MSG

No matter how many degrees, titles, or accomplishments we received before accepting Christ into our hearts, none of them compare to the high privilege of having Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Our best days, before Christ, don’t come close to the joy we find in our daily relationships with Him. All the things we used to base our self-worth around, we no longer view as necessary.

The most valued credentials we treasure in our new life is that of a child of the One True King. Everything else pales in comparison to our new identity. We are no longer what we do. Our identity lies in Christ and what He has done for us. There is no nostalgia for past triumphs. Now is the time we celebrate the new victories Christ is giving us each day.

Most of us have difficulties with what we remember. We remember the things we should forget, and we forget the things we should remember. Recovery in Christ allows us to realistically look at what our lives once were and what our lives are like now. All the things that were so important to us no longer hold any value. Our greatest accomplishments are found in our obedience to God and our relationships with Christ.

Today’s Prayer

Lord God, everything that we had before knowing Christ is worthless compared to knowing Christ now. Help us to remember Christ in everything we do and every decision we make. Amen.
