Crave

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12 NIV

Those of us who have struggled with addiction understand what it means to crave. Those times when we’re not even thinking about drinking or using and something hits us. It might not even be that we want to use or drink. It starts with being irritable, restless and discontent. Something is not right and we just can’t put our finger on it. Moments pass and we feel as though we are slowly going insane. This is what it feels like to crave a drink or drug.

This same scenario plays out with any addiction. And yes, even codependency. Codependency is really just an addiction to control and fix others. Cravings happen with every addiction. Most of the time we don’t even realize that we are craving. Things just don’t seem right and we can’t seem to pinpoint why.

1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” When we turn to God He will make a way. Cravings will occur for us who struggle with addictions and codependency. But God is faithful. We surrender the desire to use and act out. Sometimes we have to surrender to Him until the moment passes. God will provide a way out. And he will be with us as we are released from the bondage of addiction and codependency.

Crave

Father God, remove from me any cravings seen and unseen. In recovery, I only want to crave being close to You. Watch over me as I go down this road of recovery and create a way out of every temptation. I pray all this in Your Son’s name, Jesus. Amen.
