You were running superbly! Who cut in on you, deflecting you from the true course of obedience? This detour doesn’t come from the One who called you into the race in the first place. Galatians 5:7-8 MSG

Many of us have been running a good race. We’ve been doing what we’re supposed to be doing. We go to meetings, serve on leadership, reach out to the newcomers, and all the other things we do in our recoveries. Then, somewhere along the way, someone cuts us off. We are detoured away from the race we’ve been running.

Sometimes it’s a new relationship that consumes us. We’ve seen lots of people in recovery get into what we call “relation-slips.” We get detoured and our recovery suffers. At first, everything seems fine because we have something new and exciting in our lives. Then slowly, we find ourselves moving in a direction that is contrary to the race we’ve been running.

There are lots of other things that can cause us to detour away from our race. God will never detour us away from what He’s called us to do. If God called us into recovery, He’s not going to call us out of recovery in a few months to go do something else. God put us in this race for a reason and not a season. Recovery is a lifelong process. Recovery is a way of life. We have been placed in recovery, by God, to fulfill the mission He has given us. We must stay focused on this race and we must continue with God’s mission for us.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, You entered me into this race called recovery for a reason and not a season. I am in recovery because of Your divine appointment. I am in recovery because it is Your will. My will has only caused pain and misery. Keep me in the race and help me to not get detoured from the race by things of this world that glitter and sparkle. This race called recovery is more valuable than anything this world has to tempt me with. I will not be detoured from Your purpose for my life. I pray all this in Jesus name, Amen.
