When we have a resentment toward someone, we tend to focus our attention on what they did that caused our resentment. We often do so to the point that the person we have a resentment against is living rent-free in our heads. This means we are letting them influence a lot more of our time, energy, and focus than we should be allowing them. It’s time to serve our resentments living rent-free in our heads eviction notices.
It’s been said that having resentment is like swallowing poison and waiting for the other person to die. When we allow someone to live rent-free in our heads, we cannot focus on our recoveries or our relationships with Christ. We cannot serve two masters. In order to have Christ as the center of our lives, we must let go of unforgiveness towards others. Keeping resentments only hurts us and our relationships with Christ.
Allowing our minds to gravitate toward negative thoughts has become a toxic habit for many of us. Changing our thought lives away from negative patterns toward healthy, Christ-centered thinking requires us to be intentional and relentless. We toss out every thought that has held us in bondage in our own minds. Today we serve notice to our resentments and negative self-talk. We are making Christ the center of our thoughts, and everything else that does not belong is being evicted.
