God loves us just as we are. God loves us so much that He doesn’t want us to remain stuck where we are. God wants to grow and mature us, to not leave us bound to where we are right now. In recovery, we learn to expect growth and to even embrace growth. We know that God is moving us forward because we can see the changes that have occurred in ourselves from where we once were.
We are not like the world that shouts, “Love me as I am.” We are a people who love each other despite who we once were. Change is constantly happening in our recovery journeys. We don’t allow ourselves to get stuck in who we are at this moment. In recovery, we are either moving forward or sliding backward.
When we do what is necessary for growth in our recoveries, who we are is constantly changing. There is no way to “love me as I am” if we are growing and maturing in Christ because who I am no longer exists. We expect growth because our God expects nothing less than the best for us. Growth is a natural process for those who desire to move past who they are now and are willing to let go of the desire to be complacent and comfortable.
