First Light

Light shines on the godly, and joy on those whose hearts are right.
Psalms 97:11 NLT

The moment we open ourselves up to admitting we are powerless, and in desperate need of a savior, Christ’s light shines on us. We begin to see things that have been hidden deep inside us. This light permeates our souls to the core. We can now see the insanity of our old lives. Everything that was hidden is now shown in Christ’s brilliant light.

When the light of Christ shines into our hearts, we see ourselves. Some of us see ourselves for the first time. Christ’s light is our first light of seeing what is real in our lives. Just a short time ago, we would have run to our old behaviors to avoid this piercing light of Christ. But now, the light is comforting, and we are unmoved. We now experience Christ’s warm and soothing light as it shines on everything that, before recovery, was engulfed in darkness.

As we journey through recovery with Christ, the light is always present. At one time, we would have preferred the comfort of darkness. Unforgiveness, resentment, shame, and self-loathing all kept us wrapped up in a blanket of darkness. That old blanket no longer soothes us. We are now enveloped in a blanket of light. Light shines into the dark places of our hearts, and the darkness can no longer hide.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, shine the bright light of Jesus into every dark corner of our hearts. We pray for Your brilliant light to remove any hiding places for our old pains to hide. Help us go deeper into Your bright light. Amen.
