I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. Romans 7:15-20

We do not have the power to change anyone, including ourselves. Oftentimes we forget that it’s not us who do the inside work of heart and attitude and the outside changes in our behavior. God alone does the work. We just need to have the willingness to allow Him to do His great work in us.

If we are working the first step and living a life of surrender, then the understanding is that God will make the changes in us. If we could change on our own, why would we need God and why would we need a sponsor and a community of others who understand our struggles? When we get into the self-reliance of believing that we can change ourselves, then we put ourselves on the same level as God. By surrendering to God, we allow Him to make all changes in us.

Allowing God to change us is like watching the water from a river flow over jagged stones. Over time the stones are changed. Little by little their rough edges are smoothed and they become something different. With time, the rough stones become smooth and shiny. This is what God is doing in us. Flowing over and through us to make us shine with His love.

Heavenly Father, change me. Help me to be more like Your Son Jesus. YOur love flows over me and I am changed. You smooth out all the rough edges and make me shiny and smooth. May Your Light shine through me always. Amen
