We need to keep our attention focused on Christ as we walk this recovery path. Taking our sights off Christ is like sinking into a deep ocean of despair that is unmanageable. Christ has to be our main focus in order for us to continue this journey through recovery. It’s too easy to get distracted by everything going on in the world. It’s very easy to become overstimulated by everything that’s happening around us.
Being a Christian in recovery requires us to have discipline. It takes a lot of work to become focused. Many of us have gone through life undisciplined and unfocused. Some of us were diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Even if we struggle with maintaining attention for any length of time, we can all benefit from spending a few moments each day focused on Christ. First, we can spend small amounts of time with Christ. Then, as we practice more and more each day, we will be able to spend more time with Him than we could have ever imagined.
Spending time being focused on Christ should never feel like an obligation. It is a time of joy and peace. As we find ourselves wanting more time with Christ, the things of this world stop holding their attraction. In recovery, we begin to desire the unseen more than the seen. Christ teaches us to open our eyes and ears to see & hear what is beyond this physical world. Focusing on Him makes us aware of His omnipresence in our lives.
