Gratitude is essential to the Christ-centered recovery process. Having an attitude of gratitude does not come naturally for some of us. We had to learn how to live a life centered around gratitude. Before recovery, we lived lives of entitlement. Our mindsets were that we deserved, or were entitled to, all the good things that happened to us. When we did not get what we thought we deserved, our thinking was that somehow we had been victimized. We lived our lives from the standpoint of victimization and entitlement. This standard of living is a great formula for addiction and compulsive behavior.
The opposite of entitlement is gratitude. Christ moves us away from being entitled to living a life centered on gratitude. No matter what hurt, habit, or hang-up drove us into the rooms of recovery, our healing must be based on gratitude. We give thanks to God each day for this new, revitalized life. Our old life serves as a reminder of everything for which we need to be grateful.
Today we give thanks to our savior, Jesus Christ. We are not the entitled spoiled children we once were. Christ is removing everything that used to be a part of us. We no longer live lives as victims. Our new identities in Christ don’t allow us the luxuries of entitlement and victimization. We have moved away from being whiners, and we are now grateful winners. No matter what happens in our lives, we pause and give thanks to Christ. Gratitude changes everything.
