The best indication of life is growth. If an organism is not growing, it’s probably dying. So how do we, who are in Christ-centered recovery, experience growth? The best way for us to grow is when we are in community with one another. God designed each and every one of us to have a need to be in fellowship and community. None of us were designed to experience life outside of a community. To do this would be to step outside the boundaries God set up for us.
Recovery is about relationships and not about achievements. Recovery is not about who has something or who is the best at something. Recovery is about loving God, others, and ourselves. We grow as we love one another. Growth does not happen in isolation. In fact, when we experience isolation, we become unhealthy and dysfunctional. Our ability to grow depends greatly on our willingness to invest in others, as well as to grow in Christ as part of His body.
Our recoveries are dependent upon two things. Getting right with God and getting right with others. We are designed for community. In a community, we grow and become healthy in an atmosphere of love and support. Our recovery community loves us, challenges us, keeps us from being complacent, and offers us an example of how to be a growing follower of Christ. We cannot, and will not, receive any of these blessings when we are outside of our recovery community. We are each other’s forever family.
