Hard Pressed

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Recovery is a wonderful way of life. In recovery, we learn it is possible to have difficulties and, while in the middle of the storm, we can stop and have time with our Heavenly Father. In the past when we felt out of control, we would do everything we could to regain control. The thought of being powerless to fix whatever was happening was foreign to us. If we couldn’t fix what was wrong, then we believed that there was something wrong with us. And the more we tried to fix and control, the more out of control we became. Our vain attempts at trying to make everything the way we thought it should be only served to display the depth of our arrogance and pride.

Admitting powerlessness is not a sign of weakness. When we admit that we are powerless, we are actually aligning our thinking with the reality of God’s beautiful and perfect Will. Out of this alignment comes a power that goes beyond any amount we could muster on our own. This is the great irony of living a life in Christ. Christ calls for us to let go of our desire to control and to follow Him. The rewards for letting go of our attempts to control are immeasurable.

In the middle of the storm, we feel God close to us. The world is falling down around us, yet we feel safe and protected. God wants to have us close to Him. When we stop trying to be in control, we move closer to the Creator of all things.

Father God, This is a broken world we live in. There are going to be difficulties and challenges. You Son told us that there are going to be difficulties in life, but to take heart because He has overcome this world. Our struggles are meant to grow us and to glorify you. In the end, we will overcome all our struggles and hardships. And with You, there will be a complete victory. Amen.
