Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5

Who are the meek?

The meek are those who are gentle, humble, patient in adversity and attempt to be like Christ. Matthew 11:29 says “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” We find rest for our souls when we learn from Christ and are gentle and humble.

The meek are those who yield to Christ and are willing to learn from Him. The meek are those who surrender their will to Christ each day. To be meek is to join the family of Christ.

If it is the meek who inherit the earth, this is because the earth, God’s earth, can not be given away or taken. It is a gift. Or, in the words of this beatitude, it is an inheritance.

To be meek is to know that we are broken and in need of a savior. It’s in being meek that we become a part of the family of Christ and His inheritance.

Heavenly Father, I surrender my will over to you. I want to be a servant rather than just serve you. Your word promises that I will inherit the earth when I yield myself to you. Thank you for letting me be in your family and the family of believers that also are inheritors of this earth. Amen.
