Scripture is inspired by God for a purpose. When we study, allowing Scripture to enter our hearts and change us, we are also being inspired by God. God’s Word moves us to do things that we would never have done had we not studied His word. We know that Scripture is inspired by God because it changes us as we study and meditate on it. When applied to our lives, Scripture changes the way we see ourselves in the world around us.
The word inspired means God-breathed. Some translations of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 use the words “God-breathed,” instead of “inspired by God.” God uses His Word to breathe new life into us. The very act of reading and meditating on God’s Word is causing us to develop a new way to breathe. We know how to breathe with our lungs, but now we are learning to breathe through the Word of God.
God breathed life into His Word, and we inhale His breath each time we read and study Scripture. We can memorize Scripture, but unless we fully inhale the breath of God, our hearts will not change. God breaths deep into us, and we experience healing and inspiration. When we study Scripture, we take time to fully inhale God’s breath. God’s breath is life-giving and inspires us to do His will.
