I have loved you even as the Father has loved me . . . When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!

John 15:9-11

God commands us to love, even when it’s the most difficult person to love. God commands us to forgive, even when the person seems unforgivable. God doesn’t command us to do these things for the other person’s benefit. He wants us to obey Him because He loves and understands how dangerous hate and unforgiveness is for each of us. Every command we have from God a command of love, meant to give us guidance and freedom.

God is always showing us His irony. Freedom comes from being a servant of Christ. The world says we are restricted because we follow Christ. The Truth is that sin is the only thing that keeps us chained and enslaved. When we follow Christ, we are doing so out of love, instead of an obligation. This is the difference between being a slave to sin and being obedient to Christ because of our love for Him.

Sometimes people share that they are in recovery because they lived their lives apart from Christ, recovery from that way of life. They say that following Christ means they cannot do the things the world says are enjoyable. These Believers feel that restrictions are necessary, sacrifices are mandatory. In recovery, we believe the contrary; we don’t see them as restrictions because we don’t want what the world wants. Our love for God and the real freedom to obey Him, break the bondage brought on by living selfish, self-seeking lives. This, to us, is true freedom without the trappings of the world.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, we are under the command of love. We are following Love’s command. We love because You loved us first. We forgive because You know it’s not good for us to hold onto anger and resentment. We follow You because You know what’s best for us in every area of our lives. We are obeying Love’s command. Amen.
