We are the people who have a past. Most of our past consisted of jealousy of others and an unhealthy desire to compete for whatever we thought others were getting that we were not. Our jealousy and need to constantly have more than those around us left us empty and exhausted.
In recovery, we are learning to be people who enjoy seeing others experience victories and blessings. We are learning to be encouragers and even to motivate others. Recovery changes our selfish, self-seeking nature. We now motivate, inspire, push, and encourage others to grow and mature. The real test of leadership is not in being the center of attention. Real leaders grow leaders by stepping back and allowing others to step forward.
The secret of growing a recovery group is not to have more people. The secret is to grow leaders. Real leaders grow other leaders. Real leaders don’t hang onto their positions and feel threatened by people who are growing into leaders. The mark of a leader is someone who is willing to grow others so that they themselves can be replaced. Christ has placed us in leadership for a reason. We need never fear or fall back into our old jealous and competitive natures. We grow by teaching others how to be leaders. In this way, we grow our recovery groups and expand the Kingdom of Heaven.
