There are times in recovery, that we catch ourselves going back to our old thinking and behaviors. Sometimes, we don’t even know we’re doing it until we are well into our old behavioral pattern. That old, self-destructive thinking creeps up on us, and we find ourselves going right back to doing the same things we told ourselves we would never do again. We return to our vomit.
Recovery in Christ gives us an opportunity to stop turning back to the things that used to bring us comfort. Those things had stopped working long before we entered the doors of recovery, but we continued to go back to them. We sought out the kind of comfort that led us down very destructive paths, the kind that never really worked in the first place.
Now, there is no longer a need to go back to what never really worked. We put what is dead behind us and press forward towards a new life in Christ. Breaking away from self-destructive habits is not going to be easy. We pray for clarity and the ability to recognize what triggers our old behaviors. Christ is leading the way forward and away from the snares that would consume us.
