We cannot act our way into a new way of thinking. Trying to do so is another way for us to take control of our lives, not trusting God to do the work of changing our hearts and our minds. Real, sustained change comes from the inside out, not the outside in. The change Christ is making in our hearts and minds is demonstrated in our actions and our attitudes.
When our thinking changes away from what is worldly and onto Christ, we experience what is called a paradigm shift. As we grow in Christ, we start to see changes in our values and beliefs. In the beginning, changes in our thinking are radical. We continue to experience changes in our thinking as we continue to grow and mature in Christ. Our entire outlook is changed, continuing to develop as we grow in our relationships with Christ.
Paradigm shifts can be abrupt or subtle. Sometimes we experience a shift in our thinking that is so intense, it seems the world has shifted, and everything is different. Most of the time, our shifts in thinking are minor, and we see certain things differently. All throughout the Gospels, Jesus facilitated paradigm shifts in people who He spoke with. These people’s thoughts were completely altered from their original states. Jesus is still causing paradigm shifts in His Believers today, causing each of us to view life with a whole new perspective.
