Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4
Perseverance is one of the most important aspects of the recovery process. There are going to be times when we feel like everything is working against us. We are going to experience feelings of defeat and dejection. Recovery can’t promise a life of total bliss. What recovery can do is give us the tools we need to persevere in the middle of our storms. In recovery, we are no longer defenseless against all that we experience in this broken world.

Many of us don’t experience freedom from bondage because we don’t want to work for things that are difficult. We want Glory without perseverance. Our rewards come to us with the determination of adhering to God’s plan for us. We experience victory in the middle of our steadfastness to stay the course. Many of us give up right before the miracles happen.

God is calling us to persevere. Our faith and our understanding of God’s love for us mature during these times of patience and diligence. Recovery is difficult at times. If we are not having to preserve through difficult times, it may mean that our recoveries are stagnant and we are not growing. Our struggles are actually blessings that God has given us. He loves us enough to allow us to mature in our faith. He doesn’t want us to lack in anything that will keep us from Him. Recovery is simply a process of sanctification brought about through perseverance.

Heavenly Father, Give me the strength to persevere and to meet any of the challenges that this life puts before me. Help me to remember that what is going on now is temporary and that the struggles I endure and part of a greater plan of helping me to grow and mature. Help me to see the joy in everything because your hand is in everything. Amen.
