Imagine all of us on a cruise ship. The destination of this cruise ship is somewhere in the Carribean. An island with white, sandy beaches and clear, blue water. We are all so excited to get to our destination and experience our time in a tropical paradise. We have lots of great things to chose from on the ship. We can eat a variety of different foods. We can see different types of shows, or we can just relax on one of the decks with the warm sun and cool ocean breeze. Everything is arranged for us, except for the decisions on how and where we will spend our time. We can do just about anything other than change the direction the ship is going.
This cruise is a lot like God’s plan for us. God is the captain of our cruise ship and is navigating us safely to our destination. The ship represents God’s plan for us. While we get to decide what we want to do within His plan, once we have surrendered to His will, God is in charge of the direction He is taking us. God gives us free-will to choose what we want to do within His plans for our lives. Free-will means we are under no obligation to love and glorify God. We surrender everything to God out of love and not an obligation.
At one time, we mutinied against God and His authority over our lives. The problem was we had no idea how to captain our own lives. Much like a huge cruise ship, we drifted aimlessly in an ocean of darkness and despair. The more we tried to fix our lives, the less we were able to enjoy all the opportunities of a surrendered life. The more we tried to right our direction, the more our lives became off-course. We finally surrendered to the captain of our lives, God. He now has a plan and a purpose for our lives. That plan is much better than any plan we ever had for ourselves. God’s plan is navigating us safely through rough waters to a destination we can only dream possible.
