Giving Up Control

It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. Galatians 5:19-21 MSG

Our uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions consumed us. Addiction is addiction. It doesn’t matter if we struggle with addiction to drugs and alcohol, sex, gambling, control (co-dependency), perfectionism or relationships. The outcome of these addictions is the same. The solution is also the same: Jesus Christ, as he moves in our lives and guides us through the twelve steps. Today, I will surrender trying to have my way and allow the Holy Spirit to guide me in God’s will.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Father God, I surrender all my vein attempts to get my way in everything. Help me to be willing to be willing. Thank you for your wonderful, beautiful will in my life. Your blessings are so much more than what I could ever achieve on my own. Let me decrease in my will so that You may increase in Your will.
