The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out. Proverbs 20:5

Each of us has distinct patterns of behavior that make up our personalities. Our behavior tends to follow an order. These patterns of behavior have been developed over time. We don’t see the patterns because the patterns have become so ingrained in our day to day lives. We just go through the patterns without realizing.

A good sponsor helps us to identify patterns of behavior that are hidden from us. But, there is a problem. Having someone point out to us that we have unhealthy patterns of behavior can be a little unnerving. Afterall, shouldn’t we know what we are doing and why we are doing it? The answer would be no. We can’t see it on our own. We need others who have gone through this same process to draw it out. We need someone who has had the courage to hear about their own self-destructive patterns of behavior, someone who has fearlessly examined themselves with the help of a sponsor.

Recovery is a process of discovering self-destructive behavioral patterns and then having the courage to examine them. We then ask God to replace the unhealthy patterns with healthy ones. In recovery, we are getting unstuck and are on a new road called The Road to Recovery.
