To be restored to sanity, we have to let go of our old ways of thinking and behaving. Before we came to believe, we thought it was okay to gossip and spread rumors about others. We didn’t think twice about manipulating people to get what we wanted. Many of us didn’t have a problem holding onto past hurts and resentments. Whatever we wanted, we felt justified in the means by which we obtained it. All this was normal and natural behavior for us.
In recovery, we realize the ways in which we thought and acted were normal by the world’s standard. However, our thoughts and actions were not acceptable by God’s standard. The world tells us that we have to rely on no one to get our needs met. We have to be self-sufficient. If we rely on anyone to help us, then we must be weak or defective.
God’s standard is the complete opposite. He wants us to rely on Him. He wants all of our trust and faith. He knows that we are broken and must rely on Him. God wants us to come to Him just as we are.
In the second step, we are coming to the cross. We leave all the insane thinking and behavior from our past at the foot of the cross. Our old way of life dies and we are restored. We come to believe that we have a new life and a higher purpose. We begin to understand that restoration comes from letting go and allowing Christ to change us.
