Christian Recovery Devotional

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.

1 Corinthians 3:6

We put our hands upon our plows and wipe the sweat from our brows. We are planting good seed along the way of recovery. Sometimes, it seems as though all of our labor produces no crops. We pour ourselves into those who enter the rooms of recovery, and oftentimes they leave, never to be seen again. But take heart, all of our efforts are not going to waste. The time for a seed to sprout may not be at the moment we plant the seed.

We are called to plant the seeds, to work the fields, and to water the ground; we are not called to make the seed grow. God will grow the seed in His time, and the seed will yield its harvest at His desire. We till the ground by making sure our recovery groups are available to all who are seeking them, making those groups safe for all who enter. We plant the seeds of hope and grace by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone who enters the doors of recovery. We water the seeds through our testimonies, love, and support.

God grows the seed. We have done all we can and all we are called to do. Some seeds grow immediately and others take time. Each seed grows in the way in which God designed it for the person who receives it. We don’t get to pick who gets a fast-growing seed or who gets a slow-growing seed. God knows exactly what each person needs and when the seed will take root. No seeds go to waste in God’s Kingdom. We continue to plow our fertile fields, water the grounds, and plant seeds. Recovery is such a beautiful garden of life. God blesses us by allowing us to watch this life spring forth from where there was no life before.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, help us to plant good seeds into those who are coming to recovery meetings. Help us to provide fertile soil along with just the right amounts of water. God, You alone are the one who grows the seeds into maturity. Shine Your light on the seeds so that each one will grow in Your time. Amen.
