Service to our recovery groups, and to the people who seek healing from their struggles, is an important element of our recoveries. In Christ-centered recovery, service work is accomplished out of love for God and for those who struggle. Service work is also how we glorify God as well as complete His will.
Our service work is different from non-Christ-centered recovery. We don’t do service work as a means of paying back others for all the things we did wrong. Service work is not atonement for our sins. No matter how hard we work, we can never make up for what we’ve done, to ourselves, and others in our past. God freely forgives us when we go to Him and seek His grace. We could spend years in recovery doing service work, and we still wouldn’t get the results God gives in one minute of humbly asking Him to forgive us.
Because God has forgiven us, and we no longer work for forgiveness, we are free to serve out of love and joy. When our motives are all about serving God and others, and not about ourselves, we experience freedom and joy in doing God’s will. We are no longer bound to shame and guilt from our past. We simply ask for God’s forgiveness, and we are set free. Service work is now a blessing to us as well as to those we serve. In recovery, we serve out of love and not out of obligation.
