C. S. Lewis wrote, “Each day we are becoming a creature of splendid glory or one of unthinkable horror.” God is doing a great work in us to soften our hearts. Many of us were at one time that unthinkable horror. We did great harm to ourselves and anyone else who was unfortunate enough to be in our paths. When we are without Christ in our lives, we are creatures of unthinkable horror.
Changing from being an unthinkable horror to a creature of splendid glory does not come naturally for us. Our hearts had been hardened over many years. Our minds were closed to any thoughts of needing to change. Only Christ could soften our hearts and renew our minds. Recovery is an inside job. We are changing from the inside out, instead of the outside in.
We know we are on the right path when our hearts are pure and our minds are focused on Christ. We no longer contemplate revenge for those we think have wronged us. When Christ is in our hearts, there is no room for malice towards others. Christ and hate cannot occupy the same space. Each day we are becoming more like Christ and less like the unthinkable horror we once were.
