Softly Gently

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

Step 5:  Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of our lives.

Working on an inventory with a sponsor helps us to recognize the hand of God in our lives. Softly, gently God has been moving us, even before we were Believers. We might not have believed in Christ but Christ did believe in us. We were loved before we were born and we were loved in the deepest pits of our despair. His love never ceases.

As we progress through recovery and the 12 steps, we begin to see how Christ had been calling us to Him. At first, we only see very small glimpses of Christ. Then, as we progress through our inventory, we start to see Him in unexpected places. Situations we once thought of as painful we now see with new eyes. God is using everything in our past to bring glory to His promises.

Doing a spiritual inventory of our lives is not about discovering what we did wrong. Doing a spiritual inventory is about discovering what Christ did right in our lives.

Written by James Miller

Heavenly Father, I was blind. I couldn’t see You in my life. You are opening my eyes. Each day You show me more of Yourself. I know now that You’ve always been there and, even more so, that You always will be there with me. I’m learning that it was never about me and it was always about You. In Jesus name, Amen.
