Being teachable is essential to the recovery process. Just knowing that we are poor in spirit is not all there is to the first Beatitude. Knowing that we are broken and in need of a Savior moves us into the need to have a sponsor. We understand we cannot do this life on our own and we search out others who are further down this road of recovery than us. To allow ourselves to be teachable could mean the difference between moving forward in recovery or remaining stuck.
In order to move forward in our recoveries, we must allow ourselves to be held accountable by others. We learn to be transparent, real, honest, and teachable. One of the most difficult tasks in recovery is learning how to seek counsel from others before we make decisions. We don’t seek counsel because we want someone else to be responsible for our decisions. We seek counsel because we know what life looks like when we attempt to be compulsively self-reliant.
Being teachable allows us to be open for growth and movable into God’s Will. Being teachable helps us to learn from the wreckage of our pasts. We no longer live our lives on our own terms. We are now seeking wise counsel and accountability. Our willingness to be teachable is the very thing that enables us to be great sponsors and accountability partners to others.
