There are times when we face difficult decisions. Often in the first year of our recoveries, we are told not to make any major decisions. This can be problematic in several different ways. Not making a major decision is equivalent to making a major decision. In addition, it’s difficult to learn how to make healthy choices if we are avoiding making them. A better way to learn how to take the next right step would be to ask God to guide our steps and choices.
We can’t take a vacation from life. Things come up in life that require our attention. Life doesn’t get put on hold because we are now in recovery. It’s important that we learn how to make healthier choices for ourselves. We do this by trusting in God and others. We share our burdens and situations with others before we act. It’s better to discuss our possible options with someone we trust in order to prevent unwanted outcomes.
Taking the next right step doesn’t always mean that step is going to be easy or comfortable. The choices we make can be difficult at times. God allows us to take the next right step toward Him or a step away from Him. We learn that life has more peace and joy when we allow Him to guide our footsteps. No matter where we are in our recovery journeys, we pray, talk with others, and ask God to show us which direction to take the next right step.
