Jesus instructed His disciples to keep watch and pray. Several times in Scripture, the phrase keep watch and pray is stated by Jesus. We usually understand what it means to pray, but Jesus also included the word watch in His instructions. Watch means to be vigilant and alert. Like a guard or a watchman, we have to stay vigilant and guard against the enemy attempting to sabotage our recovery walk with Christ.
Christ told His disciples to keep watch and pray for several reasons. He knew that the enemy would attack, and they needed to be ready for his attack. Christ was also telling the disciples that prayer was not a passive action. There were things they needed to do while praying that involved being aware and alert. Jesus knew that prayer was an action word.
There is a battle happening while we are praying. The enemy does not want us to be in a relationship with The Father. He is going to attack us where we are weakest and in those areas of our lives that we have not kept watch over. Keeping watch means to examine ourselves for vulnerabilities in our defenses. We learn to look for things in our lives that have caused us to lose faith and to move away from Christ. We learn to rely on Christ in every area. We keep watch and pray.
