Each of us is going to experience difficult times in our recovery journeys. Sometimes it might seem that what we are going through is intolerable. It’s in these times that our focus becomes narrowed, and we have difficulty seeing the bigger picture. We get lost in what’s going on at the moment and lose perspective with reality. What we are experiencing is temporary and will not last forever.
God does not create pain or suffering. He does allow us to experience pain, but God doesn’t cause the pain to happen. Without pain, there is no free will. Without free will, there is no way we would be able to choose to love Him. We would be nothing more than creatures without the ability to choose good or bad, love or hate. We experience pain so that we can more fully experience God.
When we are going through difficult times, reminding us that this too shall pass helps us to stay grounded. When we draw near to Christ, He will draw near to us. Christ will strengthen us and help us to get through whatever is going on in our lives. We are never going to escape pain in this life. In recovery, we learn to stop avoiding pain. Pain no longer disables us or causes us to flee. We focus on Christ and not our current condition. This brings understanding that this too shall pass.
