On Christmas Day, we celebrate Christ leaving His throne in Heaven and coming down to Earth. In Heaven, Christ was worshiped and glorified as the king of all creation. Christ came down from Heaven to be born in a stable. He was born into poverty, and His life was immediately in danger. King Herod had decreed that all baby boys under the age of 2 were to be put to death. Mary and Joseph fled with Jesus to Egypt where he became a refugee. Christ lived among us as fully God and fully human.
Christ came to Earth, left His throne, and lived in poverty. Christ loved us so much that He came to Earth to live among us, so that we, the lost and broken, could become a part of His royal family. We live our own lives in the poverty of denial and self-obsession, following Christ who came to give us new site and a new life with purpose.
Christ has given us life and a new family whose bloodline is directly from the Creator of the Universe. By worldly standards, we might be poor. Christ has given us riches beyond imagination. His most precious gift is the gift of love. We share Christ’s love with everyone we encounter. Christ is our King, and we are His Family.
