Recovery, at its core, is about change. We turn from our old selfish, self-centered natures and move towards being Christ-centered. The third step is about turning our lives and our wills over to the care of God. We surrender our lives to God and the course of our lives is changed. We are now walking away from darkness and death and into light and life.
The wonderful part of change in recovery is that we don’t actually make the changes ourselves. Change comes when we become honest, open, and willing to change. We allow God to make all changes in us because we now understand that we can’t change who we are. There would never have been a need for us to enter the doors of recovery if we ourselves could do all that was needed for us to change. God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
God is the author of all change. We turn to Him and stop attempting to play God. He is in charge and makes changes in us as He sees fit. God makes changes in us in His time. Just as there is joy when an artist paints, a songwriter creates a new song, or a gardener plants his seeds, God is taking great joy with the masterpiece He is creating in us. We turn to God and He transforms our lives into something beautiful.
