Listening with our hearts

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

A line from the poem “The Station” by Robert Hastings reads, “It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad, but rather regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who would rob us of today.” When we first come into recovery, we have a lot of regret and fear. Sometimes it seems our regret and fear have overtaken us, and we have become comfortable in the embrace of the “twin thieves”.

Recovery is about getting back what was stolen from us. Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Recovery is about getting rid of regret and fear, living life to the full.

The twin thieves have no place in our lives anymore. They provide no more comfort for us. As we go through the process of recovery, we find that regret and fear don’t fit into our new lives. Freedom from yesterday and tomorrow is how we live in the present. The twin thieves can no longer steal our joy, hope, or peace. Today we are learning there is no room for fear and regret.
