In the process of working the 12-step recovery program of Celebrate Recovery, step 3 calls for us to “turn our lives and our wills over to the care of God.” The sentiment that seems to get lost in this step has to do with love. God wants us to surrender everything to Him, not because He wants to hold us captive, but because He wants us to experience life with Him. God’s unfailing love for us is why He asks us to turn our lives and wills over to His care.
Jesus Christ died for all of our sins, past, present, and future, at one time. We must commit ourselves to Him in two different ways: first, with our lives and then, with our wills. When we dedicate our lives to Christ, it’s called “dying to ourselves,” and we only do it one time. However, surrendering our wills to Him is a daily activity. Sometimes, we might even need to surrender our wills to Jesus several times a day because we are lured, by temptations, to take back what we have given Him. The act of giving control of our wills over to God each day is love in action. We show this love through surrendering our lives once to Him, and our wills as many times as is necessary.
It’s in step 3 where we explore the true depth and meaning of love. Love is sacrifice. Each day that we surrender ourselves to Christ, we realize just how much we never understood love. God cares for us with a love that is unrelenting. God isn’t asking us to surrender our lives and wills to Him because He is a harsh and demanding God. He wants us to surrender so that we can understand what love really is and know how to live in His unfailing love.
