So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.

Ephesians 4:25

Many of our hurts were born in public. We experienced shame, embarrassment, rejection in our dealings with others. These hurts left us guarded and distant from others, even when we found safe places. Many of us were also wounded in private. We attempted to hide deeper into isolation and keep our wounds hidden. Recovery comes when we understand that we need to be in a safe, healthy community in order to heal. We can not heal ourselves. Each of us needs one another to experience healing.

Being a Believer who is in Christ-centered recovery means that we are also Belongers. We all belong to Christ, as well as to each other. Being a Belonger means that we never have to feel alone again. There may be times when each of us experiences loneliness, but as Belongers, we have a choice about these feelings of depression and solitude. We can choose to feel alone and distant, or we can choose to feel a part of our recovery communities. Before coming into recovery and becoming a Belonger, we didn’t have that choice. We didn’t have a community of recovering Believers around us to make loneliness a choice.

None of us are ever going to get through this life under our own power. That’s not how God designed us. We need each other. When we isolate, remain distant, refuse to open up about our struggles, we experience dysfunction and ultimately insanity. When we are in a loving, safe, and healthy community of Believers, we are free to grow and experience Christ on a higher level. We need each other in order to recover and to experience what it means to be the Body of Christ.

Today’s Prayer

Father God, thank You for giving us such an amazing recovery community to belong to. We may all go to different churches with different doctrines but You bring us all together. You have brought us together through the very weakness that once separated us, and now that weakness is Your strength. We are now a community of people who belong. Together, none of us need ever have to go through this life alone. Amen.
