We have a new life, and God is always gracious in His giving. God has given us a new wardrobe to go with our new life. Before recovery, many of us dressed in our own wardrobes of worry, control, anger, and mistrust. We wore coats of resentment and bitterness but found they never kept us warm.
Our old suits slowly faded, looking worn and weathered from use, yet never felt the comfort of familiarity. We couldn’t wash our old wardrobes, nor could we take them off, so we continued to wear them in filthy conditions. Many of us grew tired of wearing our old struggles and sin. We longed to wear clothing that was new and fresh, instead of our grungy attire.
God heard our cries and offered us a new wardrobe. We were faced with deciding to keep our old, dirty costumes or to receive God’s gift of new, freeing armor. Letting go of our tattered and worn apparel wasn’t easy for a lot of us. They were the only garments we had ever known. In recovery, we learned how to shed, then discard, those heavy burdens weighing us down. We learned how to feel comfortable in our new clothing God made specially for us. We are now wearing God’s armor of truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation. We carry with us the sword of the Holy Spirit as we practice compassion, kindness, humility, strength, discipline, and love. We have chosen to remove the worn, dirty outfits of our old lives. God has dressed us in His finest clothing as His gift for our new lives.
