The song “South Canadian River Song” by Michael Murphy gives a wonderful analogy for how Christ changes us. The song is about a river that flows toward an ocean of God. At times, the river is wild and the current fast. Other times, it flows at a steady pace over the rocks, along the banks. This water flows over the rocks and changes them. The rocks are changed from rough and jagged to smooth and round.
The Holy Spirit is doing the same kind of changing with us. We are being transformed into something different. But instead of the changes happening on the outside, we are being changed from the inside. The flow of the Spirit is washing over us, changing us over time to be more like Christ. Our hearts of stone are becoming flesh as the Holy Spirit is working to change us.
Our lives in recovery are like a river that is flowing towards an ocean of God. Change happens slowly like a stream leading to a river. The river moves swiftly, and we begin to see the power of God in our lives. A mighty force is moving us and changing us. Soon, we will be engulfed by God’s ocean of love and grace.
