Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Many of us came into recovery deeply wounded by words. Words have a way of cutting deep into our psyche’s. Many of our addictions, our need to be in control, people pleasing behaviors, and anger issues can be traced back to trauma caused by past verbal abuse.
Words by themselves don’t really mean anything. When inflection, tone, and desire to cause pain are added, our words can severely damage. Words can tear a person down or our words can build someone up. If we have not dealt with our pain caused by harsh words, we tend to inflict that same pain on others. Hurt people, hurt people. However, loved people, love people.
Christ-centered recovery gives us the opportunity to heal from wounds inflicted by painful words. Our recoveries allow us to step out of who others said we are and into who Christ says we are. We have this amazing opportunity to heal from our past wounds, and begin to experience what it’s like to be the light of Christ in this dark world.
